About Gelmedix

Materials science built for the long game.

Gelmedix was founded in Cambridge, MA in 2022 to address two specific, solvable problems in construction materials: the predictable cracking of concrete across its service life, and the CO2 intensity of Portland cement clinker production. Neither problem is new. Both had well-understood engineering paths toward mitigation that the market had not yet connected into a single product system. The company develops gel-based self-healing chemistry and low-carbon SCM blending as a unified material system for B2B construction specification.

"Concrete has been cracking since the Romans invented it. The difference now is that we understand the pozzolanic chemistry well enough to engineer the repair into the binder matrix itself — and we have a carbon accounting framework that makes it imperative that we do."

Founding Story

How Gelmedix started

Paolo Sabatini spent several years working at the intersection of cementitious materials research and industrial chemistry — first at a university research group studying autogenous healing in cement paste, then at an early-stage industrial chemistry company developing polymer-cement interface additives. The observation that persisted across both was straightforward: the concrete industry had a mature and extensive product range for crack repair, but the repair products were specified after cracking — not before. Nothing was built into the matrix.

In 2022, working with Dr. Priya Mehta — a materials scientist with specific background in pozzolanic reaction kinetics and polymer swelling systems — he co-founded Gelmedix in Cambridge, MA to take the gel-based healing matrix concept from bench characterisation into construction-grade specification. The Cambridge location was a deliberate choice: access to university materials testing infrastructure, proximity to the civil engineering community at area institutions, and the talent pipeline that makes early-stage deep-tech in building science viable in the northeastern US.

Gelmedix is bootstrapped and focused on the technical development and specification programme. There are no investors to satisfy, no round timelines to manage. The timeline is the product development cycle and the specification relationship with engineers who need to understand the mechanism — the crack width targeting, the activation chemistry, the compliance-targeting framing — before they can write it into a project specification.

What we stand for

Long Service Life

Infrastructure designed for a 50-year service life should serve 50 years. Chloride-accelerated rebar corrosion, freeze-thaw fatigue, and the compounding damage from patch repairs that fail in the same conditions as the original crack — these are engineering problems, not inevitable. GX systems are designed to extend the interval between maintenance interventions, not accommodate the next repair cycle as a given.

Measurable Carbon Reduction

We publish design targets and aspirational goals using precise framing — "designed to target," "our goal is to achieve" — because vague sustainability claims are liabilities in a specification context. GX materials are not EPD-certified. We are working toward that. In the meantime, the mechanism and the compliance-targeting language are available to any specifier who wants to understand what they are claiming when they include GX in a LEED v4 materials credit worksheet.

Specification-Grade Materials, Not Concepts

We do not sell the idea of self-healing concrete. We provide mix design parameters, exposure class guidance, target crack width ranges, and CSI MasterFormat model specification language. A specifier can engage with GX the way they engage with any other admixture system — on the basis of defined performance targets, framed honestly as design intent rather than certified result.

Meet the Gelmedix team.

Four people. We are not a platform company, not a software layer on top of a commodity product, not a carbon-credit scheme dressed in materials language. We develop and specify a concrete admixture and a mortar system. That is the whole thing.
